Addressing Health Inequities

Health inequities are systematic differences in the opportunities that population sub-groups experience to achieve optimal health, leading to unfair and avoidable differences in health outcomes.

Good medical practice: a code of states that: Good medical practice involves using your expertise and influence to identify and address healthcare inequity and protect and advance the health and wellbeing of individual patients, communities and populations.

Activities about Addressing Health Inequities focus on recognising and reducing disparities in health outcomes and access, social determinants, policy advocacy, and interventions for marginalised populations. This includes people with disabilities, the LGBTQIA+ community, migrant populations, First Nations peoples and anyone who has faced inequities in accessing healthcare.

Cultural Safety in Aotearoa New Zealand

The Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) requires doctors to meet cultural safety standards.

Cultural safety focuses on the patient and provides space for patients to be involved in decision-making about their own care, and contribute to the achievement of positive health outcomes and experiences.

Cultural Safety in Australia

The National Scheme’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Cultural Safety Strategy 2020-2025 provides the following definition:

Cultural safety is determined by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities. Culturally safe practice is the ongoing critical reflection of health practitioner knowledge, skills, attitudes, practising behaviours and power differentials in delivering safe, accessible and responsive healthcare free of racism.

– Ahpra & National Boards

Consistent with the strategy, it’s expected that your CPD activities allow critical reflection on your clinical practice in relation to:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander approaches to health
  • The continuing impact of colonisation, racism and bias on health outcomes on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Rights-based approaches to improving health services (including outcomes and access)

Ethical Practice

Ethical practice in obstetrics and gynaecology is rooted in key principles such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, confidentiality, and informed consent, all aimed at ensuring patient-centred care and professional integrity.

Respecting patients’ reproductive decisions, promoting their health, avoiding harm, and ensuring fairness are essential. Healthcare professionals must stay updated on their skills, disclose conflicts of interest, prioritise patient welfare, and be honest about potential adverse outcomes while respecting patients’ cultural and personal values. As advancements like genetic testing and fertility treatments arise, these ethical considerations become increasingly important to safeguard maternal and fetal health.

The PDP is a plan of your development requirements based on reflection of your practice and assessment of your skills, knowledge and educational needs.
