What is the RANZCOG mentoring program?

The RANZCOG mentoring program facilitates mentoring relationships for RANZCOG Associate Procedural Trainees and members, FRANZCOG trainees, and Fellows at any phase of their membership journey.

Whether you are a FRANZCOG trainee seeking support from a Fellow, an early-career Fellow wishing to connect with an experienced clinician, or mid-career clinician interested in new perspectives, the free mentoring program can be of benefit at every stage of an O&G career.

Mentorship facilitates healthy support networks that reduce isolation and improve wellbeing and engagement, particularly for those working in rural and remote areas. Mentoring is also an approved CPD activity.

Explore information for both mentors and mentees in our Mentoring Program Handbook.

Video transcript

The RANZCOG Mentoring Program is really about connection and support. It gives our members and trainees the chance to learn from each other, share experiences and to build confidence. Mentoring really doesn’t need to be complicated. Often it’s a simple conversation or a piece of advice given at the right time, but it has the possibility to make a huge difference.

What I think inspired me to become a mentor in the RANZCOG Mentoring Program is that I have had a lot of help throughout my career. There was this specific senior colleague who showed me what the specialty can be. That really inspired me to choose this career and who was then supporting and mentoring me over the first, say, 5-6 years.

I decided to participate in the RANZCOG Mentoring Program because I was facing some challenges in my training. I wanted to seek some advice from someone who was outside of my immediate network who could give me some unbiased and empathetic advice. The Program matched me with someone who was outside of my state, which was really helpful because they were outside of my immediate network and that helped me to open up and discuss my issues. Each time we met we broke down any issues or plans into small achievable goals and then made a plan to follow up. It sort of helped what could have been an overwhelming or difficult situation to be much easier and it was good to know that I had someone supporting me that I could go to if I had questions or needed any extra advice.

Having a mentor as a sounding board, someone who could share some of their own career choices was really, really important. I think I just want to give that to others if I can and I think that’s kind of a responsibility if you reach just, you know, certain seniority in your career.

My mentor has been incredibly supportive and has helped me most with building my communication skills, building my advocacy skills and self confidence. If someone said to me that they were thinking of signing up to be a mentee with the RANZCOG Mentoring Program, I would say just do it. It’s a wonderful opportunity by being matched with a mentor that’s most suited to you, you can focus on your personal and career goals with that one on one relationship.

I’d encourage everyone to consider being part of the Program, whether as a mentor or as a mentor or indeed both, because we can always learn something from both sides of the table. By taking part, we help each other grow and strengthen our college community.
