Why OGET needs to continue
The ongoing Australian Government funding support of OGET is essential to maintaining and advancing safe obstetric and gynaecology care across rural and remote areas. Building on the success of the pilot phase, the Australian Government extended funding through February 2026, enabling the establishment of additional hubs in Wagga Wagga (NSW), Burnie, and Launceston (TAS), and expanding support from 20 to 56 rural and remote hospitals.
Despite these achievements, significant gaps in access to obstetrics and gynaecology services remain. OGET addresses critical workforce shortages, builds clinical confidence, reduces professional isolation, and strengthens retention of skilled health workers through locally delivered training and closer regional-metropolitan collaboration.
Without sustained investment, there is a real risk of losing momentum in strengthening the rural and remote workforce. Continued support will allow OGET to expand its reach to support more women and babies across Australia.
