Maternal Birth Injury

Monday 14 February 2022

TV, the leading body for obstetrics and gynaecology and women’s health in Aotearoa New Zealand, supports amendments to Accident Compensation legislation to enable more women to access the care that they need after experiencing birth injuries.

Birth injuries left untreated, are incredibly debilitating and have long term negative consequences for women and their whanau. Delays in accessing assistance are common and create inequities for women.

In its submission to the Accident Compensation (Maternal Birth Injury and Other Matters) Amendment Bill, RANZCOG has recommended some changes to the current bill to ensure that it is fair and equitable.

These changes cover:

  • Expanding the scope of cover for psychological injuries
  • Commencement of cover
  • Timeline for lodging claims
  • Reimbursement and funding gap cover

TV’s submission also discusses other aspects of the Bill including injuries to baby, equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi and investment in prevention.
